Service of Process in Mississippi

Service of process is how Mississippi courts put your business on formal legal notice — that it's being sued, subpoenaed, or drawn into some other proceeding. How Mississippi Structures the Process

Mississippi requires every registered business entity to keep a registered agent on file at a physical, staffed street address in the state. Process servers and sheriff's deputies deliver legal papers to that address, and the agent is on the hook for accepting them during regular business hours. That way the system keeps working even if you switch offices, travel out of state, or run the business from somewhere else entirely.

Why Handling This Yourself Gets Risky

Acting as your own registered agent is allowed in Mississippi, but it puts the full weight of same-day availability on you personally:

A missed delivery can start your clock without you knowing it. If a process server can't find you at your listed address, Mississippi permits alternate service methods that may begin your response window regardless.

Your address becomes a public record. The registered agent's address is searchable in the Secretary of State's entity database. List your home, and anyone can look up where you live.
